Tinder for seniors: is there one, and is Tinder worth it after 60?

A fair look at swiping in your sixties and seventies, and the alternatives.

There is no official Tinder for seniors. Tinder is open to every adult over 18 and you can use it at 60 or 75, but most of its members are much younger. Many older Australians get on better with a site made for their age, where everyone has a similar stage of life in common.

How does Tinder work?

You create a profile with photos and a short bio, set the age range and distance you are interested in, and Tinder shows you profiles one at a time. Swipe right if you like someone, left if you do not. If you both swipe right, it is a match and you can message each other. It is quick, visual and, for many people, rather fun.

Tinder calls itself free, and you can match and chat without paying. Paid tiers, called Tinder Plus, Gold and Platinum, add extras on top. It is owned by Match Group, which also owns Plenty of Fish.

What is Tinder good at?

Credit where it is due. Tinder is simple to use, the app is polished, and its safety features are better than many people assume. In Australia you can get a Photo Verified badge, and since September 2025 new Australian members have been asked to complete Face Check, a short video selfie compared with their photos. Share My Date lets you send the details of a date to a friend. Prompts ask "Are You Sure?" before someone sends a message that might be offensive, and "Does This Bother You?" when you receive one. Reporting and blocking are built in.

It also has sheer numbers. If you live somewhere with few people around you, a big app can turn up someone where a smaller site might not.

Is Tinder any good for people over 60?

That depends on your patience. The difficulty is not the app, it is who is on it. Tinder's own marketing is aimed at younger daters, and US research gives a sense of the pattern: a 2022 Pew Research Center survey found 19 per cent of online daters aged 50 to 59 had used Tinder, compared with 6 per cent of those aged 60 to 69 and 1 per cent of those 70 and over. Those are American figures; we have not found an Australian equivalent.

In practice that means fewer people your age in each swipe, and a quick-fire format that rewards a striking photo over a good conversation. Some people in their sixties enjoy it anyway. Others find it tiring, or feel it is built around a kind of dating they are not looking for.

How to make Tinder work if you try it after 60

  1. Set your age range carefully so you are shown people you would actually like to meet.
  2. Get the Photo Verified badge. It tells others you are real, and you can look for it on their profiles too.
  3. Write a proper bio. A few specific lines about your life give people a reason to start talking. Our profile tips for over 60s help.
  4. Say what you are looking for. Friendship, a relationship or something casual: being clear saves everyone time.
  5. Keep chatting in the app until you have met, and be wary of anyone pushing you to WhatsApp quickly.
  6. Use Share My Date or tell a friend before you meet someone for the first time.

What are the alternatives to Tinder for older people?

If you would rather meet people at a similar stage of life, sites for older singles are the natural alternative. Single 60s is for Australians over 60 and lets you say whether you want friendship, romance or both. It works in the browser on any phone, tablet or computer, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app, with nothing to download from an app store. SilverSingles and SeniorMatch are both for people over 50. If you would rather stay with a large all-ages service, Plenty of Fish is another option, also with selfie verification.

Our guide to the best senior dating sites in Australia compares them, and the page on the Single 60s app explains how it works on a phone.

Swiping or browsing: which suits you?

Swiping is fast and based mainly on photos. Browsing on a site for older singles is slower: you read a profile, look at interests such as cruises, volunteering or long conversations, and write when something catches your eye. On Single 60s, daily match suggestions also take into account things like the relationship type you want, distance, interests, and smoking and drinking habits. Neither approach is right or wrong. It is worth asking which one sounds more like you on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
