Where do singles over 60 meet in Australia?
Nine places that work, from the bowls club to the browser on your phone.
Australians over 60 meet new partners and friends in two main ways: online, on dating sites made for their age, and through regular group activities such as U3A, Probus, bowls, walking groups and volunteering. Group activities build friendships slowly; dating sites tell you straight away who is single. Using both works best.
Why does meeting people feel harder after 60?
Work used to do the introducing. So did the school gate, the kids' sport and the friends of friends at a barbecue. By your sixties many of those circles have thinned, and the people you see each week are mostly married or not looking. Nobody wears a badge saying they are single, either, which is the one thing a dating site fixes.
The places below all have one thing in common: you go back regularly. Seeing the same faces every Tuesday is how strangers become friends, and occasionally more.

Is online dating the easiest way to meet someone over 60?
It is the quickest way to find people who are definitely single and open to meeting, which makes it a good place to start. A site made for older people saves you scrolling past profiles half your age. On Single 60s, nobody has to guess what you are after: each profile shows whether that person is open to friendship, romance or both. Most of our Australian members live in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, then Western Australia and South Australia, and among members aged 55 and over, women and men are close to even. If you want to see who is near you, our page on senior dating near me explains how searching by area works.
U3A and Probus: the two big social networks for retirees
U3A, the University of the Third Age, is run by its members for its members. There are no exams and no entry requirements: people share what they know, so a retired engineer might teach astronomy while a former nurse runs a French conversation group. Australia has around 250 U3As with about 100,000 members between them, in cities and country towns alike. Classes give you a reason to chat and a reason to come back next week.
Probus clubs are social clubs for retired and semi-retired people, usually meeting once a month with a guest speaker, and organising outings, lunches and trips in between. The first Australian club met at Hunters Hill in Sydney in February 1976, and 2026 marks fifty years of Probus here. Many clubs are mixed; some are for men or women only, so ask before you go.
Bowls, walking groups and sheds: meeting people while you do something
Many people find conversation easier side by side than face to face. A bowls club is the classic Australian version: most clubs run social or barefoot bowls sessions where beginners are welcome and someone will lend you a set of bowls. The clubhouse afterwards does the rest.
Heart Foundation Walking is the country's largest free walking network, with local groups led by volunteers. Walks are at a gentle pace and the chat is half the point. Councils and community centres often run their own groups as well.
Men's sheds, and the growing number of women's and community sheds, give you a workbench and a cuppa with people who like making and fixing things. They are aimed at friendship rather than romance, and that is exactly why they suit many people after a loss or a move.
Does volunteering help you meet people?
Yes, and it is one of the least awkward ways to do it, because you arrive with a job to do. Op shops, community gardens, food relief, hospital guides, Landcare groups and local festivals all need regular hands. Choose something you would enjoy anyway, go on the same day each week, and the friendships tend to follow. Volunteering is also one of the interests Single 60s members can pick on their profile, which makes it an easy opening line.
Speed dating for over 60s and singles events near me
Speed dating and singles nights do run in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, and ticket sites list them under singles or dating events. Be aware that many cap the age at around 60 or 65, and some are aimed at people in their forties and fifties, so read the age range before you book. Singles walks and dinner clubs are an alternative with a gentler pace. If you go, treat it like any first meeting: public place, your own way home, and no pressure to swap numbers on the night.
Seniors festivals: a good excuse to try something new
Most states hold a seniors festival or seniors week each year, with talks, concerts, dances, walks and come-and-try days, many of them free or low cost. Victoria's festival and Queensland's Seniors Month both fall in October, as does Tasmania's Seniors Month; Western Australia's Seniors Week is in November, and the New South Wales Seniors Festival comes round in March. These are useful for testing a new club or class before you commit to joining.

U3A is aimed at people who are retired or semi-retired, but each group sets its own membership rules. Contact your local U3A to ask what it offers and how to join.
